Drive in Movie Are Fun

Let’s face it; if there are two things Australians love more than anything else, it would have to be outdoor entertaining and sitting back watching a blockbuster flick!

And with Australia’s great outdoors providing the perfect backdrop, there’s no better way of combining both these loves than reclining under the stars with a packed esky of cold beer, a BBQ cooking and your family and friends watching the latest Hollywood has to offer.

Many drive-in devotees from yesteryear will remember taking their sweetheart to the drive-in for a fun and entertaining time. Saturday night at the drive-in was a sacred family ritual.

Then came the advent of VCRs/ DVDs, indoor multiplexes, and eventually the internet. This coupled with soaring property taxes and rising real estate prices, led many drive-ins to go permanently dark.

But while the original outdoor cinema has declined in popularity since its heyday in the 1950s to the 1970s, a new generation of moviegoers is now discovering the joy and nostalgia of watching a film in the open air on an inflatable movie screen.

Initially taking off in Germany and the United States, Australia is now in on the act thanks to the enthusiasm and persistence of Smart Digital Australia.

Imagine going down to the local school park to watch the comedy classic The Blues Brothers for a fundraising event. A live Blues Brothers inspired band plays in the background and everyone is dressed up as Dan Aykroyd’s character Elwood whilst the sun goes down waiting for the movie to start.

While fundraising events are one of the most popular uses for outdoor movies, the evening might be a commercial occasion for a local business or a family get together in your very own backyard – what ever the occasion, it will be a huge success.

Outdoor cinema is a fresh and unique take on an old favourite.
